Phishing & Smishing
What's the difference?
  • Phishing is when criminals send fraudulent emails that trick recipients into clicking a malicious link.
  • Smishing is when criminals send fraudulent text messages to trick recipients into clicking a malicious link.
  • In both cases, they will act as if they are sending from a reputable organization, such as your bank, finance company, insurance company, etc.
How to Protect Yourself!
  • Use security software on your computer and keep it up to date. Preferably, set it to update automatically to detect new security threats.
  • Set your mobile device to automatically receive updates, as they may include protection against security threats.
  • Protect accounts using multi-factor authentication - meaning that along with your username and password credentials, you have an extra layer of security by using an authentication app, security key, biometrics, or facial recognition.
  • Protect any data you have that is not backed up to a network by backing it up to cloud storage or an external device.
  • If you believe you have been a victim of a phishing attempt and have responded, please contact us immediately.

What happens if I click?
  • The link may take you to a website containing malicious code.
  • The code could secretly install a virus or malicious software (i.e., malware) on your computer
  • The virus or malware could then perform a task, such as tracking your keystrokes or corrupting your files.
  • The result could be compromised personal or confidential customer information.
Examples:
Don’t click on any attachments or links you are not expecting.
  • You made a large purchase, and your card has been charged, but you know you didn’t make the purchase.
  • Scammers may ask you to confirm information via email, phone, or text.
  • Scammers may send you a text message acting as your bank, wanting to verify a debit card transaction.
  • Scammers may call, acting as a representative from your bank, to verify information.
  • They may want you click on a link to make a payment.
  • When waiting for your holiday packages to arrive, be aware of fraudulent shipping notices that appear to be from FedEx, UPS, and USPS. Only use tracking information from the original shipping confirmation.
